Chapter 2

My father-in-law was still seething with anger.

"Emily, you committed adultery during your marriage. The evidence is conclusive. As the party at fault, you have absolutely no right to inherit my son's estate!"

My heart filled with bitterness, and tears began to flow.

Could it be that he was deliberately slandering me for money?

When my husband was alive, we were known as a model family in the neighborhood, admired by everyone.

My husband loved and doted on me, and my in-laws treated me like their own daughter.

My husband did leave behind a considerable inheritance, but in my heart, the relationship with my in-laws was priceless.

He must be unable to bear the pain of burying his son, which is why he's acting so out of character.

Thinking this, I forced a smile: "Dad, what are you saying? You know how much Jack and I loved each other!"

"The baby in my belly is absolutely your flesh and blood grandchild! He's already seven months along. How heartbroken he would be if he heard his own grandfather doubting him like this!"

Hearing this, my father-in-law became even angrier. He grabbed my arm: "Shut up, you shameless woman!"

"Our family won't acknowledge such a bastard! Come with me to the hospital right now and get rid of it!"

Being in late pregnancy, I almost fell when he pulled me. "Dad, please calm down! The doctor must have mixed up the reports!"

As soon as I finished speaking, my mother-in-law, who had been standing silently in the corner, suddenly reacted.

One hand lightly stroking her chest to calm herself, the other covering her mouth as she dry heaved, looking extremely uncomfortable.

My heart sank. Ignoring my own predicament, I asked with concern: "Mom, are you alright?"

My father-in-law let go of me and hurriedly helped my mother-in-law sit down.

"Honey, you're not taking care of yourself. Why were you just standing there?"

"You need to be extra careful now. Sit down and rest!"

I looked up at the window in surprise. Had the sun risen from the west today?

How did my chauvinistic father-in-law suddenly turn into such a doting husband?

Perhaps my husband's sudden death had made my father-in-law realize the true meaning of life?

My mother-in-law gently pushed away my father-in-law's arm that was holding her. "I'm fine. Let's focus on the matter at hand!"

My father-in-law obeyed immediately, turning his head to glare at me fiercely:

"We definitely won't acknowledge that bastard in your belly. You must abort it today, there's no room for discussion!"

"Don't even think about getting the house, car, or money. Otherwise, I'll let the whole country know what a promiscuous woman you are!"
