Chapter 2

Jack came home with a cake and saw that both Chloe and I looked upset.

He bypassed me, his wife, and went straight to Chloe, asking with concern, "Chloe, who upset you? Why do you look so unhappy?"

Chloe let out a coquettish huff towards Jack and glanced at me sideways.

"It's your wife. She's trying to kick me and my son out with a cold face. You need to handle this, Jack. Don't let someone overstep their boundaries. I am her sister-in-law after all."

Jack turned to look at me, his eyes clouded with displeasure. He spoke coldly, "Evelyn, apologize to Chloe."

I looked at him in disbelief and tried to explain, "Chloe barged in with her son, saying you were going to adopt Tommy. We were about to go out, and Chloe wouldn't leave. Was I supposed to lock her in the house?"

Jack ignored my explanation and apologized to Chloe on my behalf.

"I'm sorry, Chloe. Evelyn doesn't know better. I'll teach her a lesson later. Let's sit down and cut the cake for Tommy."

Seeing Jack treat Tommy like his own son, my heart ached.

With tears in my eyes, I asked him, "Weren't we supposed to go out for dinner? Is the cake you're going to eat the one for my birthday?"

Jack impatiently opened the cake box and said in front of them, "Evelyn, how have you become so petty after three years of marriage? What's wrong with letting Tommy eat a bit of your birthday cake? He's just a child."

With red-rimmed eyes, I questioned him, "I've been preparing to have a child for you for three years. Now you're adopting someone else's child without even discussing it with me. What does this mean?"
