True Health Report

My Fiancé Slept with My Sister, Then I Fought Back

Chapter 5

7,378 words

I couldn't take my eyes off the marriage license lying between Alexander and me on the soft leather seat. My name was already printed beside his in neat, official lettering. There was only one thing missing.

My signature.

“You've got to be out of your mind,” I murmured, looking from the document to the man sitting across from me. “Did you really think I'd escape one controlling man only to willingly put myself under another man's authority? If that's what you believe, then you clearly know nothing about me.”

Alexander remained completely unfazed. He calmly lifted his glass again, the ice making a quiet sound as it shifted through the amber liquor.

“I'm well aware of who you are, Vivienne. You're the legitimate heir to a billion-dollar fortune, yet you've been legally declared incapable of managing your own affairs. Meanwhile, your charming fiancé is preparing to make sure you're dead before the weekend is over.”

He leaned toward me, and the subtle scent of cedar mixed with expensive whiskey filled the space between us.

“I have no interest in keeping you obedient. I need someone capable of fighting back. Damian has been interfering with my business for years, and I've grown tired of dealing with him.”

His gaze dropped briefly to the license.

“If we become husband and wife, your father's trust will be released according to the terms of his will. Damian's authority over your medical decisions will disappear the moment I'm legally recognized as your spouse. He loses the ability to put you back in that hospital, while I finally get the opportunity to take away everything he's spent years building.”

Alexander reached into his jacket and produced a silver fountain pen, extending it toward me.

“I'm giving you the means to set fire to the entire world he's built around you. All you have to decide is whether you have the nerve to light the match.”

My eyes settled on the pen.

For a moment, I was back in that hospital.

I remembered the padded walls, the locked doors, and the medication they forced down my throat until I could barely remember what it felt like to be myself.

Then I remembered Seraphina standing in my bedroom, her hand resting proudly over her pregnant stomach while she wore Damian's shirt.

Something inside me finally became still.

Getting my freedom back wasn't enough anymore.

I wanted Damian to experience the same helpless fear he had forced me to endure for two years.

I reached for the pen.

Our fingers touched for the briefest moment, and an unexpected spark shot up my arm. I ignored it, uncapped the pen, and signed my name across the designated line with deliberate, forceful strokes.

“There.” I dropped the document back onto the seat. “It's done. But understand something, Alexander. I'm not interested in merely ruining his plans. If we're going after Damian, I want everything he has built to come crashing down.”

Alexander's mouth slowly curved upward.

“That sounds much more like the woman I was hoping to meet.”

Then his gaze sharpened with amusement.

“Welcome to the family, Mrs. Martin.”

Twelve hours later, I sat in the back of Alexander's tinted Maybach and watched the beginning of my own comeback unfold from the shadows.

The car was parked discreetly across from my father's corporate headquarters, where the rain from earlier had left the streets wet and reflective beneath the gray morning sky.

Alexander sat beside me, calmly typing something on his phone as though we weren't waiting to detonate a scandal that would shake the entire city.

Yet beneath the quiet inside the vehicle, tension seemed to hum through every inch of the air.

Across the street stood the marble headquarters that should have belonged to me.

Damian was preparing to address the media in a live televised press conference.

Reporters crowded the plaza, their cameras and microphones aimed toward the entrance. Seraphina stood nearby in the role of devoted sister, dressed in an expensive designer coat that had undoubtedly been purchased with money stolen from my inheritance.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

“Vivienne.” Damian's voice came through immediately, clipped and impatient. “I'm going before the cameras in two minutes. I assume you're watching from the estate?”

A slow sense of satisfaction spread through me.

He had left before sunrise and instructed the household staff not to disturb my supposed recovery. He hadn't noticed anything missing from his study. He hadn't checked my room.

He was so convinced that he had broken me that the possibility of my escape hadn't even crossed his mind.

In his head, I was still trapped inside his cage.

“I'm watching,” I replied evenly.

“Good. I'm announcing that the wedding will take place Saturday.” His voice hardened into a warning. “And don't get any ideas today. The guards have strict instructions to keep you inside the estate. If you cause trouble or attempt to contact anyone, I'll have your doctors increase your medication before noon. Is that understood?”

“Perfectly.”

I allowed a hint of softness into my voice.

“Don't worry, Damian. I'm sure today will be a day you remember for a very long time.”

He scoffed before ending the call.

Alexander reached toward the console and pressed a button.

The live broadcast immediately filled the car.

Damian appeared at the podium, wearing the polished expression of a devoted fiancé who had nothing to hide.

“...the past two years have been incredibly challenging for both our company and my family,” he began smoothly. “But today, I'm grateful to share some wonderful news. My beloved fiancée, Vivienne, has made what can only be described as a remarkable recovery.”

I watched him through the darkened glass.

He looked completely at ease.

He believed himself untouchable.

“She is resting at home today while she continues to recover,” Damian continued, pressing one hand against his chest in a performance so sentimental it nearly made me laugh. “And because we're all so grateful to have her back, we've decided to bring our wedding forward to this Saturday. Together, Vivienne and I intend to lead this company toward a stronger and more prosperous future.”

Alexander stopped typing and slipped his phone into his pocket.

He glanced at the time on his platinum watch.

“Ten seconds,” he said.

I leaned closer to the window.

Across the plaza, rising above the reporters and the marble entrance, stood the largest digital billboard in the financial district. It usually displayed market updates, luxury advertisements, and corporate announcements.

“Five,” Alexander began.

His voice was almost lazily calm.

“Four... three...”

Damian was still smiling as a reporter asked him something about the wedding.

“Two.”

Alexander's eyes remained fixed on the screen.

“One.”

The enormous billboard suddenly went dark.

The crowd immediately fell silent, followed by a wave of confused murmurs. Damian stopped in the middle of his response when he realized that nearly every camera in the plaza had turned away from him.

They were all pointing toward the billboard.

Then the screen came alive.

It wasn't another advertisement.

Across the enormous display, stark white letters appeared against the dark background, announcing a message that instantly sucked the air from the plaza.

Martin ENTERPRISES PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE MARRIAGE OF CEO Alexander Martin AND Vivienne Martin.
