Chapter 4

If I don't say anything, my father-in-law will be convinced that I've been unfaithful.

But if I do speak up, it's better to tear down a temple than to break up a marriage.

What if it affects the relationship my in-laws have built over many years? How could I face my husband in the afterlife?

After a long while, I finally thought of a solution that could satisfy both sides:

"Dad, I understand and sympathize with how you're feeling."

"If you're really worried, I can go to the hospital for an amniocentesis and paternity test."

"I've kept all of Jack's belongings, so it would be easy to get a biological sample."

My father-in-law looked like a bundle of firecrackers about to explode:

"Do you think I'm stupid? You probably bring your lover home every day. Who knows whose sample you'd use!"

I frowned. Had my father-in-law gone mad with grief? Why was he being so unreasonable?

If only he had raised these doubts before my husband was cremated.

What could we do now...

Seeing that my father-in-law was about to lose his temper again, I gritted my teeth and made a decision.

At this point, I could only take a gamble. What if my father-in-law's azoospermia was a recent condition?

"How about we do the test with you? That can't be faked!" I suggested quickly before he could explode. "As long as we can prove there's a genetic relationship with you, it will prove my innocence!"

My father-in-law was about to speak when my mother-in-law burst into tears.

"We're all family. We should settle this at home!" she cried.

"There's no need for any tests that will cause a scandal. Emily is still young. How will she face people if something goes wrong?"

A strange feeling crept over me. What???

Was my mother-in-law trying to help me?

Why did it sound so odd!

Thinking about how good she had been to me in the past, I forced a smile: "Mom, it's okay. The truth will come out!"

"No one knows better than a mother whose child she's carrying!"

"Dad is getting on in years. There's no need to trouble him over such a small matter. We can just do the test. The hospital will protect patient privacy!"

My father-in-law reached out his hand to make a pact with me: "If that bastard in your belly has nothing to do with me, you must get rid of it immediately and get out of the Zhang family!"

"Otherwise, your entire family will suffer the consequences!"
